Summer '22 Cross Country - Day 33
Travel day from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Lake Milton, Ohio
Thursday, 7 July 2022
This morning we left Gettysburg after a terrific visit with Frieda’s Dad who lives in nearby New Oxford. We also had a chance to visit with my aunt and uncle and my cousins as well as Frieda’s uncle and her cousins.
One of the things I was glad to have done prior to arriving in Gettysburg was to order an E-ZPass for the toll roads. I believe I read somewhere that E-ZPass is used in 19 states and I know we could have used it in Ohio, Illinois and Indiana earlier in this trip. So I had one waiting for me at Frieda’s Dad’s house and we put it to work today on the Pennsylvania and Ohio Turnpikes.
Apparently with an E-ZPass, the tolls are less expensive than using a ticket and of course, we saved a lot of time when it came to getting through several toll booths today. As for where to get one, it appears that all participating states have them available for order. I ordered ours from the Virginia Department of Transportation since we go to Virginia fairly often. They also had a user-friendly web site. From what I can tell, it really doesn’t matter which state you get it from. Anyhow, so far it seems like another good addition to the various accessories we’ve added to our RV experience.
The drive across the Blue Ridge mountains and countryside as we went from Gettysburg to Breezewood for the Pennsylvania Turnpike entrance gave us a lot of twists and turns but also provided some beautiful scenery.
Our stop for tonight is at Halliday’s Winery in (and on) Lake Milton, Ohio. They participate in Harvest Hosts, a program for RVers where you can stay for free at over 3,700 wineries, breweries, farms, museums, golf courses and more in exchange for a pledge to patronize their business. Or as a good friend of mine says, “It’s the most expensive ‘free’ camping you will ever do!” We do typically spend much more than we would have paid for a camp site, but it’s about location and experience and this is a good one!
Tomorrow we are headed to Shipshewana, Indiana for another two nights at the same campground (and campsite) as Day 22, Day 23 and Day 24. We had to head back that way anyhow and we enjoyed Shipshewana so we figured ‘why not?’
Thank you for following Oliver’s Travels!
This sounds so fun and relaxing Scott. The dogs are very cute
