Just like yesterday, it was sunny and gorgeous as we prepared to leave Moab, Utah for Breckenridge, Colorado.
Lots of trains today, which regular readers know makes me very happy!
While the above train was kinda short, here’s a full 100+ car train in the middle of the frame:
We missed the Welcome to Colorado sign but here’s one from our first stop for gas in Fruita, Colorado:
The terrain changed dramatically in Colorado, almost like they drew the state line where the terrain changes.
Interstate 70 and a railroad follows the Colorado River making for some gorgeous scenes.
We stopped for lunch at a lovely rest area next to the river.
Airplanes look clear and very close when you are at 7,000’ elevation…
We did not capture the sign, but shortly after we passed Vail, we went up and over Vail Pass — 10,662’ above sea level. And yes, we felt some shortness of breath. This was the elevation high point of our entire journey this year and it’s all downhill from here!
Our destination is Tiger Run RV Resort where we had intended to stay just one night.
To get to Breckenridge, you pass through a cute town called Frisco.
Our timing was impeccable to enjoy the gorgeous fall tree colors.
Shortly after we parked Ollie in RV spot 26 between two chalets, we quickly realized that one night was not going to be enough and we headed to the resort office.
To our delight, we were able to extend a night. We also discovered that each RV parking spot and each chalet is privately owned. Owners cannot live here more than six months in a year, so the rest of the time, they rent out their spots and chalets. We did break the all-time record for cost per night ($125), but it’s an amazing place to be for a couple of nights.
Here’s something you don’t see every day:
The RV spots are amazing and owners have decorated them with fun things like old mining cars.
The 9,600 foot elevation is no joke and you feel every bit of it. I made spaghetti for us Friday night and measured the rapidly boiling noodles at 160 deg! And when making coffee on Saturday morning, the coffee maker hardly made any brewing sound. And then there is this:
Here’s the street where we lived in Breckenridge, Colorado for two days:
It’s nice that we can rent a place like this for a couple of days because buying an RV spot in a resort like this will set you back almost a half million dollars. That’s obviously not going to happen!
The weather forecast for Friday night was predicting a low of about 34 deg so I didn’t do any special preparation for possible freezing of my water hoses and filters. To my horror, I woke up on the middle of the night and saw it was 25 deg! I didn’t sleep well the rest of the night worrying that I might have damaged some expensive and necessary equipment. Fortunately, the tarp I had over the water system seemed to have kept anything from being damaged but water in the hoses was definitely frozen solid. So today I disconnected and drained the water from my softener and filtration system and we will either do without or use only when above freezing as we have many cold nights ahead of us.
Saturday morning, as Frieda was walking the dogs, she saw this pretty bird checking out our Starlink antenna:
That’s it for today. Mostly just relaxing and enjoying being here in the wonderful mountain air. Tomorrow we depart for North Platte, Nebraska to see trains!
Love following along with you on your travels!
