This morning, we departed Weed, California where we spent the night at Mt. Shasta Brewing Co. It was an excellent Harvest Hosts experience all the way down to the meat pizza we ordered to go last night specifically to have for breakfast and lunch today. Yum.
If you are an RVer and do not belong to Harvest Hosts, you should join now. If you are thinking about RVing, be sure to join when you do get an RV. As a friend says, “It’s the most expensive ‘free camping’ you’ll ever do” because you end up spending money with the host (we spent $100 last night between dinner, a pizza to go, and a six pack to go). But it’s so fun and there is, of course, no free lunch.
As we departed Weed, we enjoyed some spectacular views of Mount Shasta, which had been obscured by clouds yesterday.
As for Shasta Lake, it appears to be suffering from the ongoing drought.
Today’s destination, if we can get a spot, is the Travis Air Force Base FamCamp just outside of Sacramento, California.
Our experience so far with military base campgrounds frustration. While the price tends to be lower than other civilian campgrounds in the area, they either do not take reservations (typical for the Air Force), or the reservation process is horrible (Navy). It’s maddening to call the Travis FamCamp and be told they have several available spots, but it’s still first-come, first-served even for same day requests. I cannot understand the logic of that at all. But since it’s a Thursday and not a particularly busy time of year right now, we took our chances since it’s only $35 a night, which is fantastic for this area.
Fortunately, we were indeed able to get a spot upon our arrival.
We are now in position for an easy drive tomorrow to Monterey, California where we will be visiting son Bill, daughter-in-law Sarah, grandkids Tom and Elle and our granddog Freddy for the next eight nights.
Thanks for following Oliver’s Travels!
Enjoy your time with Bill's family! ❤️
I look forward to your posts every day! Enjoy you family time in Monterey.
