West Quest Part Deux - Days 45 to 47
Travis AFB to Monterey, California and first few days with family
Friday - Sunday, 23 - 25 September 2022
With the obligatory departure photo in hand, we departed Travis Air Force Base Friday morning, September 23rd to head to Monterey, California.
To describe the drive from the Sacramento to Monterey as “white knuckle” is a bit of an understatement. It probably takes months or years of immersion in this driving environment to feel comfortable. While speed limits are posted all over the place, few folks seem to observe them. Which is probably because soon, you will be in bumper to bumper traffic. And then there are things like car fires. It’s all a bit terrifying.
And assuming you survive the traffic and fires, don’t forget to ask for condiments, utensils, napkins and straws with your meal!
It was all made worth it as we arrived in Monterey, California — the first place I ever lived having been born in nearby San Jose some 59 years ago.
Monterey is one of those places you simply have to see at least once in your life. It’s unlike anywhere else in the world with spectacular beauty. And of course, Monterey Bay is one of the most important marine environments in the world.
Shortly after lunch, with Ollie all set up, we headed over to see Bill, Sarah, Tom and Elle as well as our granddog Freddy. Unfortunately, our male Skipper and Freddy are unlikely to get along, so we are going to leave Maddie and Skipper in Ollie and we’ll plan to spend our nights back at the trailer.
