We woke up this morning to dark storm clouds and lots of wind and rain. Fortunately, by late morning, it started clearing up and we decided to head to nearby LeClaire, Iowa — a quaint little town right on the Mississippi River.
The first place we stopped was Bierstube, a German bar and restaurant overlooking the river. Featuring a comfortable and fun decor, the staff could not have been more friendly and pleasant — something we’ve experienced over and over again as we’ve crisscrossed the midwest. The food offerings were both traditional German and also some interesting twists, such as the Reuben Egg Rolls which I just had to try.
After lunch, we walked the main street enjoying the sights and sounds of this quaint little town. Unfortunately, as I write this, I realize I was a bit light on the picture-taking today. I think I was so happy taking it all in that I forgot to record it.
After walking around a bit, we enjoyed cooling off at Cody Road Coffee — a cute little place with — again — the friendliest staff you would imagine. After that, we headed to Mississippi River Distilling Company for a bourbon tasting. As you probably know, they convert a lot of corn to alcohol here in Iowa and I can assure you that they have the process down pat! Again, the best part of the experience was the friendly Iowans who made our visit truly special.
The highlight of the day was our visit to a wonderful little store called Bela. Owned and operated by Tammy Danielson, we could tell immediately that this store was going to be the icing on the cake for what had been nothing short of a truly spectacular visit to LeClaire.
Tammy has done an excellent job of finding and offering unique gift and decor items that in many cases are locally made by family-owned companies. Tammy also gives a portion of her proceeds to great causes. And if you are thirsty for some water or wish to enjoy a coffee, iced tea, lemonade or other delicious beverage, she’s more than happy to make you one.
If you find yourself passing through eastern Iowa on I-80, do not pass up a quick visit to LeClaire. And if you have time for only one stop, make it to Bela where not only are you certain to find a unique and wonderful gift for someone special, you may also find out how to have a beautiful life.
That’s all for today except for this one last picture that I could not resist…
