West Quest Part Deux - Days 56 and 57
Last full day in Tehachapi, California before traveling to Henderson, Nevada
Tuesday and Wednesday, 4 - 5 October 2022
First of all, some of you eagle-eyed readers have noticed I put “August” in the dateline when it was September and I recently put “September” for my early October posts. I appreciate the feedback and I think all the posts have been updated. My excuse is that retired life is wonderful. Most days I have no idea what day it is, let alone the month. We have now camped well over 100 days this year and we love it. Life is short. Get an RV.
On Tuesday the 4th, Frieda and I spent most of the day just hanging out with Marie and Scott at their ranch which of course meant starting off the day with a goat walk.
As the sun set later in the day, I captured these pictures:
For dinner, we made pizza since Scott and Marie have a wood-fired outdoor pizza oven. Let me assure you, at the Burris’ residence, they don’t skimp on toppings.
On Wednesday morning, we got ready to depart for Henderson, Nevada after three wonderful nights at The Dam Ranch. Before leaving, we of course had to do one final goat walk.
When the goats are let out of their pen, they love to rub themselves along the fence just outside the gate.
When the ladies are on a goat walk, they love to talk with their hands.
For whatever reason, on this particular goat walk, Ghita got very interested in tearing down a sagebrush and then rubbing her head on it. The other goats thought this was a wonderful thing to do too and got in on the action. I have to admit that the sagebrush smells nice when it’s destroyed by goats.
After this final goat walk, it was time to say farewell to Scott and Marie after three amazing days at The Dam Ranch.
The drive from Tehachapi, California to Henderson, Nevada through the Mojave Desert provided many interesting sights.
The strangest thing we saw on this day was the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System (ISEGS) in California’s Mojave Desert just before crossing into Nevada.
Not knowing at the time what it was, or expecting to see it, it was quite odd and indescribably bright. No kidding, each of the three solar receiver towers was as bright as the sun and I had a massive headache the rest of the day from looking just a few seconds at it.
Before leaving Tehachapi, I bought just enough gas at about $6.95 a gallon to get across the border into Nevada thinking I would save some money there since California requires a special blend of gas that adds $2.50 to every gallon. Being on vapors, we had to buy gas at the first station in Nevada.
You have to give the owner of this gas station in Nevada high marks for entrepreneurship. He’s probably figured out just about everyone who doesn’t know better does exactly what I did. And trust me, only about 25 or so miles into Nevada, the prices were in the high $3 to low $4 range. Figuring this would be the case, I limited my purchase to 13.439 gallons for $100.51. Ugh!!!!!
Our destination was The Revere Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada because they graciously participate in Harvest Hosts program. While we did not play golf, we looked forward to eating dinner and breakfast at Buckman’s Grill. We also enjoyed the great view of Las Vegas — a place we are happy to experience at a distance.
With Nevada now added, the Olivers’s Travels map now looks like this:
Scott and I so enjoyed yours and Frieda's visit!! We had an amazing time with the two of you and very very much look forward to you returning next year! Until then...safe travels!! You two are THE BEST!!
