West Quest Part Deux - Days 41 to 43
Working Kleen Tank jobs in Newport, Oregon before ending up in Weed, California
Monday to Wednesday, 19 - 21 September 2022
As mentioned in my previous post, a lady with a gray tank problem had called me a couple of months to schedule a Kleen Tank appointment with me and thus the reason we added Newport, Oregon to our travel plans. She was confident others in the park would want service too, and she was right.
As is often the case, doing a job ends up with folks asking “what is Kleen Tank?” which often ends up becoming the case in this park. I ended up with two jobs Monday, three on Tuesday, and one Wednesday morning before we departed.
Other than to go out to dinner with Frieda on Tuesday night at a wonderful oceanfront restaurant called Georgie’s, it was, as Navy folks would say, a “working port call.” I was either working, eating or sleeping. Overall, however, it was a very productive and good three days at Harbor Village RV Park.
We got a bit of a late start on Wednesday as I had that one last job to do from 8 - 10 am but everything went smoothly and we were all set to hit the road around 11:30.
Because I had to move this final job to Wednesday morning vice getting it done on Tuesday, we had to rethink our plans to drive to Monterey via US 101 as we simply have too many miles to go to risk what could be a slow route. We therefore decided to head straight to I-5 to make better time. Along the way, I found a Harvest Hosts location that would accept a same day request, Mt. Shasta Brewing Co. in Weed, California, and we headed their direction.
When I think of I-5 in Oregon, I think of sheep. Lots of them on both sides of the highway.
And when you get close to the Oregon and California border traveling down I-5, be ready for some steep climbs and downgrades! You absolutely must know how to use engine braking when descending these mountains.
The drive from Newport to Weed was absolutely spectacular and pictures don’t really do it justice.
Here’s Mount Shasta right in the middle of the photo. Unfortunately the peak was covered in clouds:
As we arrived in Weed on vapors, it was time to get our first taste of California gas prices:
The parking situation at the brewery was a bit challenging as the asphalt portion of their lot has a good slope to it. They said we could park on the “grass,” and so we did.
With California added, the Oliver’s Travels map now looks like this:
See you tomorrow!
