This morning we departed Rapid City after three nights at the Rapid City / Black Hills KOA Holiday. We had a great visit and plan to make it a longer trip next time as there is so much to see and do in the Black Hills.
We added both Wyoming and Montana to our travels today. Unfortunately, so far this summer we “stranded” North Dakota and Wisconsin. They were in the original travel plans, but reality collided with best intentions and we’ll have to find another time to get up to both states.
We’ve seen the craziest things on this trip including trucks attached to the side of corn silos, cars on poles, etc. Today, we saw a full-size airplane wind vane!
Then there was this guy with hay bales that looked like they were about to fall off the old army truck. Glad they were going to fall away from us if they did!
Next up was a quick stop to Devils Tower National Monument. I’ve seen it before but I could never get tired of it.
We then made our way to Garyowen, Montana where we are going to spend the night, stopping a few miles away at the Little Bighorn Battlefield.
A headstone marks the spot where on June 25 and 26 of 1876, 263 soldiers, including Lt. Col. George A. Custer and attached personnel of the US Army 7th Cavalry, died fighting several thousand Lakota and Cheyenne warriors. It’s a somber place.
In a “you can’t make this stuff up moment,” we arrive at the 7th Ranch RV Park only to find ourselves checking in behind another couple driving a red F-150 and towing an Oliver Legacy Elite II as well! It turns out they own hull #823 and we own hull #961. It’s rare to even see another Oliver let alone have this happen. It was really fun!
This has been one of our very favorite campgrounds so far. A wonderful Mennonite family owns it and Charles and Ellen, the afternoon work campers who check folks in, could not have been nicer. Our only regret was that it was just for one night.
Overall an amazing day and a wonderful place to spend the night.
