We started this morning off by visiting the Battleship South Dakota Memorial. The most decorated battleship of World War II with 13 battle stars, USS South Dakota (BB 57) was called “Battleship X” after her first major battles to prevent the enemy from identifying the top-of-the-line battleship.
Archivist Chris Tucker gave me the opportunity to view some of the ship’s deck logs including this one covering January and February 1945. Amazing history!
After visiting the museum, we headed to the nearby Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History. While the zoo is relatively small, it is nicely laid out with a good variety of species on display.
Later in the evening, we went to Sheels sporting goods store — an amazing place that’s like a cross between Bass Pro Shops, REI and Dick’s. It’s so big that it features a ferris wheel in the middle!
And for dinner, we went to a wonderful place called Grille 26. Yum.
Overall, a fun day in Sioux Falls. Thank you for following Oliver’s Travels!
