As I write this, Frieda, Maddie Skipper and I are in Sandia Park, New Mexico where we spent last night with Naval Academy classmate of mine Anne Hammond and her husband Bill. Their gorgeous home sits at 6,700 feet and has an amazing view of Santa Fe some 40 miles distant. Coffee and computer in hand, along with this amazing view, here’s what we’ve been up to the last two days.
In an unusual first, I did not get an arrival or departure photo from our stay at the Sallislaw / Fort Smith West KOA Holiday Wednesday night. I think it’s probably because it was a very long day of driving (broke every bit of The 3/3/3 Rule) and it was surface of the sun hot. I did get a picture of Frieda and the pups shortly after we got on the road Thursday morning:
We stopped in El Reno, Oklahoma a little after 1 pm to get diesel for Killer and to our surprise, right across the street was a Chick-fil-A food truck! This was the first time we had ever seen one of these and it turns out it’s a trial run to see if the company will invest in a permanent restaurant in El Reno. Judging by the business they were getting, I would say go for it!
Our destination on Thursday was Schaffer Farm in Clarendon, Texas just off of I-40 and historic Route 66. Here’s how things looked just before we exited off the highway:
Situated on what was once the town of Jericho, the ghost town stands in contrast with the modern (and ugly I might add) windmills.
Here is my favorite shot looking through the front window of one of the old motel rooms and out the back where our Ollie is parked:
Overall a very pleasant and interesting overnight at this wonderful Harvest Hosts location.
Friday morning, we were off for Sandia Park, New Mexico. Here’s how things looked before we left:
Along the way to Sandia Park, we stopped at a McDonald’s in Santa Rosa, New Mexico that sits on Route 66. Standing silent vigil just across the street were these guys:
And here’s the end…of this post:
HAHAHAHA! end of the post! Love it! there is another ghost town worth of a visit with Harvest Host
SHAKESPEARE GHOST TOWN, NM-494, Lordsburg, NM 88045 - it is so worth it! the tour has a special surprise that I can not reveal here. I think it was $10-12 for the tour. This place is a super hidden gem!
